Paper Engineering

This is a lovely picture of me, don't you think?
Paper engineering is something I have always wanted to try and so I have decided to dedicate my book, the one for "The 2012 Sketchbook Project," to engineering a carousel book. Sounds cool, right? Of course the internet has tons of examples of this, so let me show you a few, if this is something new to you.
The images are dimensional!

The book opens up into a star-shape but when closed, lays flat.

A super cool book by Madeleine Hannes

My theme is "Uncharted Waters," perfect for this project, as this will definitely be a new experience. Now that you've seen my radical idea for this sketchbook project and you're interested in doing also check out the Art Co-Ops website: http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookproject. Also the books from last year will be on a "world tour" so check them out when their in your town.
Some of these dates have already passed but you maybe inspired to enter this year.

Memory Lane

I just came across some photos of my recent work I have done in progress. As that progress tends to involve a lot of different pieces, I thought it be fun to share my process. Enjoy!

images from my Italy Travel piece
images from my promo-postcard: "The World We're Leaving to Our Children"

This last piece is one I have been working on for fun. I thought playing with hand-lettering could be something new to try along with the dimensionality of the corrugated paper. It's been challenging working in such a monochromatic color scheme. Wish me luck.

Inspiration

I cam across this really neat paper animation video from Mandy Smith. Check it out! I would love to work on a project like this. Looks like I should start one. If you're someone looking to collaborate, I'm all for it. Let's do it!

Website Launch

Good news, I just launched my own professional website! Have a gander, tell your friends, and people you just met. Need a conversation stater? Well, I got one for you: "Did you see Cassandra Mazur's new website?" There you go...you don't have to use that, exactly, but you get the idea. Screen shot love:

Rio

Just for fun I made this silly illustration yesterday. I think it happened as I was listening to Real McCoy. I think the influence of the music can definitely be seen here. These dancers seem like they would be seen in a club in Rio, hence the title.

See ya!

Insanity

Today, I'm naming this post insanity, not only, because I just started the insanity workout program, (I'm really proud of myself, by the way, that's the only reason I really am even mentioning it), but because it has been really hectic lately. I just finished my postcard for self-promotion and now I have my hands full with my physical portfolio and my website. So here it is the first image I will send to Art Directors...drum roll please....
My idea for this is the world we're leaving for our children. I like the contrast of the dark subject matter against the fun and easy going color pattern and stylization. Not to mention, blowing bubble is one of my favorite past times.

Along with doing all my self-promotion materials, I've also been researching magazines and journals that allow for open submissions. I've just finished a mini project for Uppercase Magazine, a really cool magazine that showcases some very beautiful illustrations. Here is their website for more information: http://www.uppercasegallery.ca/. And yes, they're Canadian, another reason to love our neighbor to the north. ♥ Right now (deadline is May 15th) they are accepting submissions for art depicting our pets. How cute is that? So of course I did my beloved dog, Luella and in cut paper might I add. Some people love their pug or their Rottweiler but I love my mutt. (I predict that there will be a large number of illustrated pugs in that issue of Uppercase.) Enjoy!

South Carolina

Ever want to travel to South Carolina? Well, I just made it a little easier. This week I completed a map for Charleston Magazine. It contains the names of all the strange-named cities in the state. Check it out! I personally would love to see what Hell Hole Swamp is all about. I think the ink line would look great on an apron or a pillow. Can you say southern pride?
